Captain America is the official action-packed Android game tied to the recently released movie. Featuring a compelling storyline, impressive graphics and cool sound, it’s a fun action game that links well to the movie of the same name. Movie derived games have a history of being notoriously bad, so how does Captain America – Sentinel of Liberty fare?

Captain America is a side scrolling 3D beat-em up/platformer with sweet graphics, detailed sound and lots of levels to bust through. You take the role, naturally, of Captain America and progression through the levels requires you to manoeuvre through tricky platforms and take out evil baddies in a startling variety of moves.

The big strength of the game is the graphics. High quality, colorful and resplendent with detail- the action leaps off your device screen in vivid minutiae. This is supported strongly by the game’s awesome sound; impressive musical score and cool sound effects- it all establishes a hugely immersive atmosphere. The original storyline, written by a proper Marvel writer is also lots of fun, giving the game an added dimension and quality.

Another strong feature is the game design. There are loads of levels contained within the game and, as you progress, you are able to capitalise on a range of ever-more powerful moves. You can take on baddies in usual one-on-one combat or use your trusty shield to complete attacks from distance. Early levels give you a rolling tutorial as you encounter and attain these moves and it’s quite an intuitive way to learn what ‘Cap’ can do.

However, despite these ingredients, I didn’t feel particularly moved by the game. The gameplay is actually quite similar to Wind Up Knight, another scrolling 3D adventure, although Captain America arguably adds far more moves and attacking options. I guess it just begins to feel quite repetitive after a few levels when you realise that this is it. It’s fun, but there’s little diversity. Sure, the levels are very well designed, but I found myself lacking sympathy with Cap and my enjoyment of the game waned. Captain America is a really good game, but I didn’t think the fun factor lasted long enough for it to be a truly great game.

Additionally I found the game often froze and it took a number of occasions to get started. There is a rather hefty resource requirement attached to the game, which is quite a commitment even with a higher-end device. All I would say is, use some caution when thinking about downloading Captain America. If you’re a huge comic-book fan I’m sure you’ll get some ‘Marvel’ous kicks from this, but non-fans won’t be overly impressed.

Fun Factor:

Captain America is lots of fun during the early levels. The combination of great storyline, cool moves, smart visuals and immersive sound make it loads of fun and is significantly engaging. However, after this period, the gameplay just starts to stale and feel too familiar. Without much diversity, the fun-factor diminishes and becomes less enjoyable.

Addictive:

I think there’s a distinct lack of addictiveness with Captain America. While this is often down to taste, and while the game has many of the right ingredients for a great game, there seems to be little to draw you back to play the game again and again. It’s hugely polished and stunningly rendered, but you just don’t get that feeling in your guts to play the game over and over.

Graphics:

The graphics are exemplary. Brilliantly rendered in a kind of 3D (although action feels decidedly 2D), it’s all mesmerically impressive.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The sound is very professionally done and immersive. It compliments the movie soundtrack well and makes for great continuity if you have seen the film. Clearly with Marvel and Disney backing, the music is going to be superb. Add to this the voice acting and sound effects, the results are very impressive.

Should you Download Captain America? Captain America is a very very good game that falls short of being great due to repetitive gameplay. It’s superb to start with, but begins to feel overly familiar and slightly dull after a while. Perhaps I just didn’t find the patience for it, but while the graphics, storyline, sound and moves are all fantastic, the game just didn’t feel overly compelling beyond the early levels. Definitely check this out if you’re a big fan of the movie, it compliments the silver screen rendition really well. However Captain America, while ticking many boxes, just isn’t as good as perhaps it could be, given its backing. Therefore I’d recommend you download it with caution- at nearly $3, it’s quite an investment, and I don’t quite think it’s worth it.
