Camera Effects is a cool application that allows you to take photos then add some funky effects and borders. Simply take a picture and Camera Effects will open up a whole draw of different options. The app is easy to use and has some cool effects to give your pictures a really smart look. There is quite a few effects you can use to take the initial photo, then a whole host more in the editing suite. The app is lots of fun and definitely worth taking a look at.
Price: Free
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Content Rating: Low Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Impressive range of pre- and post picture effects.
- Provides lots more effects that stock Android cameras.
- Lots of borders to give your pictures that finishing touch.
- Intuitive interface.
- Easy to use.
Cons
- Camera is limited to a maximum of 5 megapixels.
Features:
Camera Effects is simple to use, merely open up the app as you would you camera, add an effect before you take the photo, then add a host more afterwards. The initial color effects for the photo include: Mono, Sepia, Negative, Solarize, Posterize and Aqua. Then you enter this post-picture editing suite with 16 different effects to add to your photo, in addition to 7 different borders to frame your picture in.
The application is very simple to use, and could replace your native camera application in terms of speed and ease of use. I’ve played with some camera apps before and they can be quite clunky, but this isn’t the case with Camera Effects. When I take photo’s it’s usually on the spur of the moment, when my daughter is doing something funny or I see something really cool to share with someone. What I do not want is to be slowed down by a laggy camera interface. Fortunately with Camera Effects, you can just open the app and click away.
A significant complaint about Camera Effects on the Android Marketplace was the apparent inability to save photos to your gallery. This probably derives from the lack of an explicit ‘save’ button. However, a bit of investigating reveals you simply click on share and you get the option to ‘Only save to gallery’, so this problem doesn’t really exist if you know where to look.
Sadly though, the app only takes pictures up to 5 megapixels, which is a bit lame if you have a better camera than that- my HTC Desire HD has a 8pm camera. On this basis, you might be wary of using the app if your native camera is more powerful. Although the difference between 5MP and 8MP is probably quite negligible (except perhaps for photography experts), it’s still a bit disappointing the app is limited in this way.

Usefulness:
Really cool for adding effects to photos, there’s a good variety in the app and it is relatively effortless to add these effects.
Ease of Use:
It’s an absolute piece of cake to use. Use Camera Effects like you would your normal camera app- only with this you have a variety of additional effects options to choose from.
Frequently Used:
I’ve been playing with the app on and off for a couple of weeks and it’s a nice difference to the stock camera experience. What I have found myself doing is using my stock camera for most pictures, but utilizing, Camera Effects when I want to put a bit more thought into how the pictures might look. So, on a whole I have probably used the app 2/3 times per week.
Interface:
The interface looks a little basic in places, but there are a range of options hidden in the app once you explore it. Overall it is very easy to interact with and transitions are smooth and functional.
