Butt Vader is a wonderfully puerile platformer game featuring a quirky alien of the same name. Butt has crash landed on Earth and now he needs to collect methane to power his ship! You help him shoot humans (which make them empty their bowels on the spot) and then *ahem* “collect”. OK, so it’s a game that will appeal to certain senses of humour, but underneath the smell it’s actually a rather complete platformer with lots of weapons, different humans and challenging gameplay.
Price: $1.99
Tested on: HTC One X
Content Rating: Low Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Loads of weapons to try out!
- Plenty of items to collect and levels to explore!
- Great if you have childish sense of humour!
Cons
- Little or no sound.
- Obviously it isn’t going to suit everyone’s tastes.
Features:
The story begins, as you would expect, in a toilet. Butt has crash landed and needs methane to power this ship. Now, as you may or may not know, human excrement contains plenty of methane, so Butt becomes poop collector extraordinaire!
Beneath the fart gags and more puns that you can shake a stick at, it’s a rather neat platform game. Levels are quite complex and you gradually collect and try out a variety of weapons. There are different types of human which seem to have different types of effects and most levels seem to include all manner of places to explore.
There’s seemingly lots to do, as well as collecting crap. You need to lock up portaloo’s to prevent the ‘contents’ being ruined so you need to find keys to do so. Some toilets can be blown up to extract the poo and many humans have to be chased down. There are even humans that fight back with their own weapons! The biggest surprise was quite how good their AI was! They really will chase you until you get them. There is plenty more to find too, with new things introduced on most levels.
What this creates is, despite the humour and word-play, is an actually pretty good platform game. It might not suit everyone, even the toilet-based humour became a little too much for me after a while, but I ended being rather impressed with the details and animations. The graphics are initially pretty simplistic but then there are some pretty cool visual effects when it comes to weapons, etc.

Fun Factor:
It depends on what you classify as fun. If you like toilet humour and fart jokes I’m sure you’ll be “bowl”ed over by Butt Vader. While it’s incredibly silly (even in a good way), if it was themed completely differently it would still make a reasonable platform game. I think it suffers occasionally when you’re not quite sure where you need to go to complete a level (it perhaps needs a bit more direction) but that aside it’s still very amusing for the potty-humoured among you.
Addictive:
I think the novelty drives you wanting to play the game initially, but there is loads of puns and jokes in the game to raise a smile or two. After this I think you’ll kind of begin viewing it as any other game of similar genre. It’s great to explore and with plenty of weapons and other features, so, for the brave, very engaging. Let’s just say it’s enough to ‘wipe’ out a lot of time.
Graphics:
To be fair to other games, the graphics are pretty sparse in general. They’re certainly not the worst I’ve seen but, to contextualise, they’re towards the ‘bottom’ of the scale. That said, there’s some good artwork involved and some of the weapon effects are pretty neat- so look out for them.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
One space where the game severely lacks is in the sound department. While it’s clearly one big nod towards the ‘silent and deadly’ variety of fart, just the odd fart noise, splat sound, explosion when and ‘ting’ when you find something of value, there’s no sound at all.
