Best Motorola DROID X Android Apps

DROID X Apps. Check out our list of Best Motorola DROID X Android Apps! This list of awesome apps will get you started with more than 40 of the most useful… must have apps and games for your new DROID X baby! Let’s get started…

Follow Our Best Apps List “AndroidTapp.com Android App of the Week”

So you know we maintain a growing list of Best Android Apps for any Android phone which features all apps we deem “App of the Week”, so be sure to check out that list!

Discover and Download Android Apps from the Web

Aside of our Android app discovery resource, AppBrain.com would be one of the best sites for not only browsing Android apps on the web but now you can install free apps directly to your phone via their website. This alleviates always searching on the phone. You’ll need a few things for this to work:

  1. Sign up for AppBrain
  2. Download their AppBrain Market Sync app
  3. Download their Fast Web Installer app
  4. Then you can search Android apps on the web and download directly to your phone!

Customization

Since this isn’t an HTC phone without the flagship HTC Sense UI you see (the home screen with the big retro clock and widgets… yeah), many users ask is there an app for that if you don’t have an HTC phone… but of course! Check out Beautiful Widgets.

Want a totally unique home screen? Try SlideScreen. Looking to control your home screen at granular levels; like set your own number of home screen panels, controlling app launcher drawer, home screen shortcuts and more, then check out the sweet editions of LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher.

Secure that DROID X and Recover it if Lost or Stolen

After shelling out a couple hundred bucks and possibly sucked into a dual year contract you might as well secure and protect your mobile investment. Apps like WaveSecure Mobile Security and Mobile Defense help you find your lost or stolen Android phone and offer remote data backup of contacts, text, media, call logs, plus remote lock and wipe.

Better Email

Since the Motorola DROID X comes with Android 2.1 software it supports multiple Gmail accounts… which is an awesome mobile email client. Corporate/business users will be happy it supports Microsoft Exchange and Gmail enterprise, push email, corporate directory, remote management and remote wipe. If that doesn’t satisfy your needs check out Exchange by Touchdown for Microsoft Exchange setups.

For non-corporate there is a default “Email” app for non-Gmail, non-Google Apps accounts for say… your personal webmail, Yahoo, or work email clients which really Sucks! Ditch that app and use K9-Mail!

Must Have Android Apps

There are some apps that are simply awesome so here goes…

Shazam is amazing! Ever heard a song in the coffee shop and wanted to know what is was? Shazam can listen to the song and tell you what it is. Google Goggles helps you search things on Google by taking a picture of it.

Augmented reality is cool! Here are a pair of apps that bring information into your world such as Layar Reality Browser, while Google Sky Map allows you to see the stars and constellations.

With that vibrant DROID X screen sucking battery juice you may need to conserve power in other ways. Apps like Advanced Task Killer and Taskiller allow you to kill or stop apps from running in the background freeing up memory and saving some power.

ASTRO File Manager helps you browse contents on your SD card while Handcent SMS blows the default text messaging app away.

Vlingo makes using your voice to control your phone to do simple tasks a breeze. Simply speak emails, text messages, tweets, as well as it can speak the aforementioned to you while you drive.

TiKL – Touch To Talk (PTT) gives push to talk walkie-talkie functionality to any Android user so now you’re not Nextel-centric to have the offer.

DROID X Video  and Music Apps

Video is positioned to be the apex of the Motorola DROID X smartphone; packed with Blockbuster video rentals, V CAST video, and NFL RedZone… there are still a few more apps to enhance the video experience on your Droid!

Qik Video allows up to HD live recording and streaming to the Web. MixZing Media Player better handles music and recommends tracks plus video along with doubleTwist Player, and ³ (aka Cubed) Music Player puts a cool 3D twist on mobile music. Here are some awesome streaming music players that you don’t need to sync any MP3 tracks; Pandora Radio, Slacker Radio, Rhapsody Music or Last.fm Personal Radio.

3D Games

Let’s take advantage of all that beautifully massive screen size and processor power with high end 3D games.

Here are a few intense actioned first person shooter games aimed at blowing things up… Heavy Gunner 3D, and totally immersive ExZeus Arcade. Experience air dog fights with Armageddon Squadron, and talk about a new twist on mobile game play… Sky Siege puts you into the game action with augmented reality as you locate, aim and fire at enemy aircraft.

Here are a couple high octane ground ripping games for lovers of race car gaming; Raging Thunder 2 and Asphalt 5 leave your eyes popped while you take a breather saying “Whoa”! Speedx 3D holds its own weight in a unique and highly addictive way in world bending obstacle racing.

Let’s throw in some sports games, first starting at the ‘Derby’ with Homerun Battle 3D, sprint and juke your way to the end zone with Backbreaker Football, and hit the ice scoring goals with Hockey Nations 2010.

Into horror and suspend games? Try Mystique. Chapter 3: Obitus, which is third rendition of the dark saga and worth checking out Chapters 1 and 2.

Pssst… wanna see video previews of 100 Android games? Check this out!

First thing to do to improve battery life is to ignore the recommendation for a task manager. Get a task manager to close down any buggy or runaway tasks, but never close any app in the background that is running normally, and most definitely NEVER use an auto task killer. It will use more battery and CPU in the long run. That is the most misunderstood thing about Android. If you want more detail search for the official blog post form google, or the many articles out theere explaining why to not use task managers.

@Chris: I see two sides to this reply in which I’d like to comment on. There is nothing wrong with installing a task manager/killer on your Android device. However, let’s keep in mind that Android 2.1+ was really designed to manage itself well without the need for an external application. Applications like ATK should only be used to kill stubborn applications that continue to run or won’t close on their own. Be aware: If the application keeps running in the background, it’s probably designed to do that from the beginning! Users should first look at the application’s settings and determine if there is a way to prevent it from running in the background. If not, then maybe you should consider uninstalling the program rather than having a program “auto-kill”. It will do more harm than good. Older Android versions may benefit more from task managers.

I agree. The idiots at Verizon installed ATK on my phone without even asking me. I did a little research and found many people who said ATK actually caused more problems than if they had just left it off. I don’t know if maybe the older or less advanced Droids needed these types of apps to run well but my X has very good battery life. ATK is a waste of time. My phone runs SIGNIFICANTLY better after removing it.

Okay, well I agree, no ATK needed on droid X, my phone is only a month old and it froze completely the other day and I removed and re-installed the battery. Then I had the tech uninstall the ATK and virus software, seems much better, but only time will tell. That is why I was so apprehensive about this but the price swayed me, $99 no brainer for an upgrade to a great high tech phone. Good luck everyone.

the video and audio formats compatible with Droid x:
    Resolution: 480 x 854 pixels
    Video: MPEG4, H.263, H.264, DIVX, XVID
Music: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, WAV, MIDI

If your video or TV shows are not Droid x playable video formats, you have to transcode them to the video formats listed above. When you google Droid x video converter, you will find Aunsoft Video Converter is the google recommended program. I have tested it, safe and good.

    hope it helps you.
