Barnes & Noble released an update for their NOOK color today bringing the eReader closer to a true Android tablet. The update brings the ability to download and use apps from what they’re calling Shop on NOOK Color. The company noted that it will have a variety of both free and paid apps, both developed in-house and from third-parties.
One of the apps is called NOOK Email, which will allow users to connect with any of the major Web-based mail providers. It also has a full on-screen keyboard, for not only checking email, but sending it as well.
In addition to apps, the update brings NOOK Color to Android 2.2 Froyo, which also comes with support for Adobe Flash. Additional enhancements, noted the company, include improved global search and quick settings such as battery indicator, shortcuts to settings and audio.
The firmware is available to download manually now at www.nookcolor.com/update. An OTA update will begin rolling out to customers via Wi-Fi over the coming weeks.
