I am reasonably sure it is nothing to do with the phone or camera (an HTC G2)

The droid is a Google phone and Google is in the business of collecting as much personal data as it can. Google is probably not trying to take over the world, but whoever does take over the world will be happy to take all the data from Google. Read Google’s privacy policies. We give them the right to keep everything we give them – searches by google, gmail, g-chat… everything. Read the news about Google’s Street View vans invading wireless networks in CT last year. Paranoid? Maybe. Senator Blumenthal (formerly CT A.G.) didn’t think it was so benign. But just research those two things and see if you’re then paranoid too.
