AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features:

Barcode Scanner Android App is great! It allows you to scan most product bar codes in 1D (UPC, EAN, etc.) and 2D formats (QR Code) to search Google for product results. You can even search for words in a book when using this app (results are populated if the book is available on http://books.google.com).

The cool thing about scanning QR Codes is the wealth of information and many applicable uses in the tiny cryptic messages. QR Codes can store calendar events, contact information, email addresses, Geo location, phone numbers, SMS text messages, plain text, and URLs. AndroidTapp.com has recently added QR Codes to every Android App Review, so you can quickly download the app from the Android Market.

How to use QR Codes on AndroidTapp.com:

There are 2 ways…

  1. Scan your monitor. Simply launch the app and scan your actual monitor with your Android phone. Tapp “Open in Market” button and Voila… it directs you to the app in the Market.
  2. Tapp the Link. Alternatively, if you’re viewing an Android App Review on your Android Phone… simply tapp the QR Code for the same effect.

These kinds of 2 dimensional bar codes are popping up everywhere. Just last week I used this app to scan a barcode on a promotional poster at them movie theater and it gave me a URL to a special trailer for tim burton’s 9

I’m testing this but I think the only thing I’d change it the fact that it starts RIGHT away. I scanned a box of Kleenex Lotion Tissues and had mixed results. I did scan the QR_Code as to whether to download or not. Nice reply.

I tried ShopSavvy and Barcode Scanner, and I think I’m sticking with Barcode Scanner because I really only want to use this to scan the two-dimensional QR codes (like the ones that link to apps on the Market). I don’t care much about barcodes, its the QR codes that are most useful on this platform for me.

is there a trick to scanning barcodes on cans? I love this app and feel it is far superior to “the other leading brand” but can’t get my droid to scan a code off of anything curved such as cans and bottles.

I just wonder, why does this app need access to my personal data and to be able to alter my wi-fi settings? I can understand net access (though it should just pass the url to the browser instead), I can understand preventing sleep mode, but get the hands off my other data!

    Definately a no go.

@rmurphy: Have you tried the application? It access personal data so that you can share it with others. For example, the app allows you to share bookmarks, contacts, applications, and your clipboard. For contacts it will actually let you create a barcode for any contact in your phone. I’m happy with the feature. It’s something innovative that you don’t find often with barcode scanning apps.

That might be alright but why does need write to my contact data. Also, why does it to know where I have been and what I have bookmarked.
As for as sharing what you have found. That is done in the browser. After the software has pulled the item. It still does not need access to my contact data.

You’re just a paranoid faggot. It’s been explained multiple times why it needs to access said data. If you’re scared of it, stay away from it. Honestly, this page doesn’t need your negative, stupid comments about how you’re NOT getting it and your STUPID reason why. People like you make me worry about the future of this world.

          • By edem on December 30, 2010 at 9:52 am:

So you’re saying that cautious people are “paranoid faggots”, and people who doesn’t install anything will obviously destroy the future… and not people who happily click on any url or install any suspicious software that promises to grant world peace… seriously, have you replaced the thinking part of your brain to an insult module, or what?

    • By Juegos on September 11, 2010 at 12:05 pm:

Yeah the insults were a bit over the top. I don’t like apps that want too much data but usually give in if it seems really useful. “Replace thinking part of your brain with insult module.” Totally nerdy and funny. But not really faggy.

You are right, it used to work quite well but as of now (April 2012, which is a while after you posted), it only constantly refocuses and doesn’t actually read barcodes any more.

I am reasonably sure it is nothing to do with the phone or camera (an HTC G2)

interesting application but, with few exceptions, still do not see much use for everyday life … maybe in the future, when more people and businesses use it allows us to compare prices and get information about products that we want to buy

  • By Scott on March 7, 2011 at 10:46 am:

The simple reason this app requires access to your personal info is that it can and most folks give it willingly. The droid is a Google phone and Google is in the business of collecting as much personal data as it can. Google is probably not trying to take over the world, but whoever does take over the world will be happy to take all the data from Google. Read Google’s privacy policies. We give them the right to keep everything we give them – searches by google, gmail, g-chat… everything. Read the news about Google’s Street View vans invading wireless networks in CT last year. Paranoid? Maybe. Senator Blumenthal (formerly CT A.G.) didn’t think it was so benign. But just research those two things and see if you’re then paranoid too.
    Cheers, all!
