BackStab HD by Gameloft is an 18th century action romp where you play the part of Captain Henry Blake. Betrayed by a fellow officer you must seek justice and revenge! Across a huge and beautiful 3D island you have to explore 4 cities searching for clues and quests. Visually stunning and action packed from the outset, the gameplay and storyline are both interesting and hugely addictive.

Features:
Backstab HD is a brilliantly rendered and engrossing adventure set on a Caribbean Island. You are the beleaguered and betrayed Captain Henry Blake who has been wronged by a fellow officer and must get revenge. It’s a pretty cliched affair but genuinely intriguing as you follow the storyline. From the first level you are thrown in at the deep end of the action. Those scurrilous Spaniards are invading and the city has to be defended. Roam through detailed streets, leap across the roofs of houses and slice anyone who gets in your way. Not since the infamous beginning of Medal of Honour: Frontline on the PlayStation 2 have I ever felt so immersed from the off.
The onscreen controls are tapered depending on your environment and it’s hugely intuitive. I’ve loathed previous games where you have lots to remember- here the controls alter depending on the environment. So, the direction “up” can make you walk/run forwards or climb if you are facing a wall. It feels far better this way and allows you to control Henry through the adventure without delays. You can also use your sword to good effect if you encounter a baddie and combat is very straightforward and natural. Henry also has a gun. This is a little trickier to use and sometimes will auto-aim at a civilian but it’s a good option from distance.
The game environment is huge and, although obviously not as big, reminded me of Grand Theft Auto cities (albeit 18th century style). This depth comes at some cost to your devices storage capacity. It needs the best part of 600MB of additional resources so make sure you have that available. I’m not a fan of extra data downloads- I often find they are unstable and it required two or three goes and quite a number of minutes to get Backstab HD downloaded in full.
The game though is, in my opinion, well worth the bother. It genuinely feels more like a console experience than a mobile one. I would bet it looks pretty incredible on a tablet too. It would be hard to differentiate the quality of mobile titles like this with PS2/PSP graphics and gameplay. The story and plot make for a cracking game that draws you in with a intriguing narrative which helps pushes players in the game. Play is diverse and, while there is a lot of running, jumping and fighting there are also different elements such as controlling a canon in the earlier levels. Backstab HD is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but, if you love mobile gaming, this is a real treat.

Fun Factor:
Backstab HD is buckets of fun and massively enjoyable. It has the High Maturity rating for a reason, it’s often quite blood-thirsty and graphic; certainly the cutting of throats and running some scoundrel through with your sword makes for a sometimes gory outcome and the graphics don’t hold that back. Running about, exploring, climbing, jumping and interacting with local people is hugely enjoyable and very cool indeed.
Addictive:
Like most adventure games of its ilk- certainly like those from the GTA stable of games, you have to complete a variety of missions to progress the storyline. You seem pretty much free to roam if you like but the music adds some urgency to your play so you feel duty bound to follow the map. The rich storyline and plot is beguiling and hold some mystery to it, so it’s something you pursue to reveal more. As gameplay is so enjoyable, it’s easy to pick up and play in order to kill some time.
Graphics:
The 3D graphics are top notch and very detailed. Even the buildings and background images are very polished and intricate. The visuals burst from your screen in a fountain of claret when you decimate the masses of baddie soldiers who populate the first city as they pillage the surprisingly tenacious townsfolk. I quite enjoyed the cute animation when you accidentally bump into someone and they curse you. Great fun! 
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
Usually with these kind of games, even the bigger and better ones on consoles, the voice acting is pretty rubbish and cloying unauthentic. But in Backstab HD it’s actually very good, even the baddies! The sound overall is very impressive; music sound effects and voices are all very well developed and executed. This really adds to the game and makes it all the more engrossing and interactive.
