AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features:

Astro Android App is a File Manager for the Android OS. It allows you to manage files on your phone without the need for a computer. Operations you can perform: copy, paste, move, delete, open with other apps, create and folders, etc. What’s convenient about Astro File Manager is the ability to select multiple files to perform actions. Another convenient feature is the ability to Search for files. The app also provides details on Android apps such as package name, version, file size, and even app activities.

ASTRO File Manager Android App features the ability to backup Android Apps to SD card… a band-aid for the loud public cry from Android users who want to free up low internal phone memory without Rooting the phone. This means you can backup the installer files (APK) on your SD Card, then you can uninstall the app. Thus freeing up space but removing the app. To reuse the app, you will have to reinstall the app from the backup.

Usefulness & Ease of Use:

Astro File Manager Android App is very useful for managing your files on your phone while mobile. The app is intuitive and has all the characteristics of file management software.

Frequently Used:

Frequency of use is user dependant, typically on demand for average users. More demanding for developers or “Root” users who can access and manipulate virtually any file on their phone as Rooted phones have broken the security protection consumer phones have.

Interface:

The user interface is list based or you change the views to; Details, Icons, Thumbnail List and Thumbnail Icon views. Astro File Manager Android App does a great job of pulling icons for files.

A must have for G1 users… I can backup my apps, install apps, zip or unzip. it even has the abilty to move or copy files or send. I luv the list view but has more options. When i backup more apps due to the low internal memory on the G1 i can see which ones are out of date, which are colored in red. select those apps to backup again… boom!! ZaP! POW! your new version is backed up.

I just downloaded it in an attempt to delete ringtones. I can find the *&^%ing default ringtones but when attempting to delete a ringtone, I just get “Error Deleting File” … everytime. When I click on details, I found they’re all -r- (readonly). On a PC, I’d use ATTRIB -R. But I can’t find how to do this on the GGGggggg phone.

Problem I saw with Astro File Manager on HTC Hero (sprint) with 8gb SDHC card. After renaming a directory, the app kept looking for it and throwing up an error message. Message indicated it could not find the original directory name after it had been renamed. Taking out SD Card (unmount) and reinserting after closing Astro made no difference when restarting Astro. Perhaps there is a bug??
    Thanks

I used Linda File Manager one year ago, later changed to Astro. I found ES File Explorer, after I’m tired of the trial period of Astro. Now I know the decision is so right, that’s just what I need.
    All good software, though.

Anyone else getting the “beta will expire in 3 days” message when you load up the app??

    Reply

    • By Android Tapp on March 28, 2010 at 11:41 am:

The app does this when there is a new version of the app available. Update it from the Market to get rid of the message else it will get really annoying and make you wait 30 seconds every time to load the app until you update it. The developer enforces this within the app to make sure every user has the latest stable version.

Not true. Today on Mar 29, 2010 it is saying it will expire in 3 days but my Moto Droid shows no updates available in Market. Bug?

I would hate to lose this very-useful little app.

I think this is a great app for backing up my apps when I need to do factory reset but haven’t found much use for it otherwise. I have also used it to move around files when I’m out and about and have no access to a PC.

HTC EVO 2.2 Froyo (not rooted) – The issue I just encounter was upgrading to a new microSD card and it doesn’t see it. I’ve tried remounting, I naturally reinstalled it, but nothing I do will display the contents of my card (and yes it has lots of data on it). I bought the Pro version (before the upgrade) so that is what I’m using. Nothing I have attempted thus far has worked so I’m at a loss.

    Any ideas?

love this little app. I’ve had to recently get a new Samsung Fascinate from verizon because my old Fascinate’s earpiece speaker was blown. I’m currently going thru re-installing all my apps, very handy when you have 11pages of apps. So far there were about 4 or 5 apps that said private and would not let me back them up so I will have to get them from the marketplace again but its looking very promising so far.
