Ask NerdGirl: Sync Twitter Contacts, Make a List By Talking, Save MMS Pictures, Vibrate My Ear, and Fixing the Wireless Market Problem!

So after some discussion, we’re going to start a new series called “Ask NerdGirl 101.”  This series is going to be on topics like “iPhone to Android” and “A Closer Look at Rooting.”  This column is made just for those of you who are new to the Android world and want to know more about your phone and how to get the most out of it.  What would you like to see an article written about?  This is for all of you so I want to make sure it’s going to be exactly what you’re looking for!  There will still be the regular Ask NerdGirl for your questions.

Now, on to today’s questions!

How does the official twitter client for Android “sync with existing contacts” with the phone book? I enabled that once, and it placed @phonedog_john under one of my contacts who is listed in my phone book only as “John”. Obviously it screwed up the sync, so I removed all the synced twitter data. I couldn’t find a way to link a contact with his / her twitter account. FYI, I’d like a solution that doesn’t involve additional apps e.g. aContacts.

Ray

There are times that the sync gets confused or just doesn’t have enough information to link a contact.  When that happens you can manually link information.  If you click on the rouge information and then hit “Menu” the option to “Link” comes up.  Then you can select exactly who and what you want to link it too.

I’m looking for an application for my Droid X where I can speak into my Droid and it will make a written list of items that I can review while shopping at a later date (ex: grocery list).

Thank you for your help on this.

Todd

There are actually a few apps, both paid and free that can do this for you.

List Master is a free app that does voice recognition on most devices.  It also does backups and allows you to send lists via SMS and MMS.  There is a pro version called List Master Pro that costs $1.49 and removes the ads and adds more features.

Taskos To Do List is also free.  This one also allows you to make calls straight from your task list and alerts you if you put a deadline with your task.  This isn’t so much of a shopping list, but a total task list.

QwikList Voice is a paid app.  It costs $1.99 but it does do a lot.  You can not only add via voice, but also by scanning a barcode.  Plus it supports Google Apps!

I just got the new android phone on U.S. Cellular, the Samsung Acclaim. I love the phone but I can’t figure out how to save pictures from my messages. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanx!

You should be able to long press the picture and click “Save to SD Card”.  If this for some reason doesn’t work, you can also download Save MMS, a free app that will allow you to save multimedia to your SD Card.

I love my android. I don’t see myself ever leaving it. It’s almost perfect for me. My only concern is it doesn’t vibrate when I get a SMS or notification if I’m on a call.  Is there anything that can be done about that?

Thanks,

Courtez

Just go to Messages >> Menu >> Settings >> Scroll down to “Notification Settings” and make sure Vibrate is checked.

Good Morning nerdgirl,

I enjoy reading your blog every week it is very informative and educational. I am currently using original MT3G rooted with CM 5.08.  I have one issue with it.  When I am using Wi-Fi, I can’t download apps from market or use Google talk. Is there a setting I need to change to be able to do these things?

Please advise.

This is a common problem that I’ve heard from people many times.  Something that’s worked for several people is go to Menu >> Settings >> Wireless and Network >> Mobile Network >> Access Point Names.  Click on your provider listed.  Then clear the Proxy IP address.

Send your ideas for Ask NerdGirl 101 to nerdgirl@androidtapp.com and title it 101!
