Ask NerdGirl: New Android Market Ditched “Update All” Apps, How to Access Music for Ringtones on Android, When Will Galaxy S Get Froyo, What Android Apps Support Full Excel Capabilities?

Ask NerdGirl asks and answers has the new Android Market ditched “Update All” apps setting? How to access full music tracks for ringtones on Android? When will Galaxy S get Android 2.2 Froyo? Plus, what Android apps fully support Excel capabilities?

This may be a really dumb question, but since the update to the market I no longer see the option to ‘update all’ when I have multiple app updates waiting. Did they get rid of that feature, or am I just missing it?

It they got rid of it, is there a work around?

Thank you!
Jamie

Only if you have multiple apps to update (that’s not manual) will it appear in the top of the “My Apps” section just under the title bar. Thanks Grimmy for pointing that out!

Hey Nerd Girl,

I am a new Android user…I can’t find a web site that tells me how to access ringtone files for Handcent SMS. I used the Verizon VCast Media Manager to load music files on my phone. I can access the files for my phone ringtone, but when I try to access for Handcent Notifications I get no music files present. Any advice would help.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Hi Robert, there’s a handy lil utility Android app called Rings Extended that simply bridges more sound file options when setting ringtones or sounds for any Android app. I wish Google would have acquired this app and simply wrapped this app into the core Android system. By default, Android only allows you to see generic ringtones and sounds when selecting, however, Rings Extended opens the option to grab music tracks from your SD card as sounds and tones.

Adobe flash player

When will this apparently be available for the galaxy s. What other apparently can I use to play videos off facebook.

Deandre, recently there were rumors Samsung has been holding back this much awaited update which is Android 2.2 (Froyo). As I write T-Mobile’s version of the Galaxy S, Vibrant, is getting the update and we still have yet to hear about all other favors of the phone. There is a workaround to still view Flash based videos from Facebook however you must have Skyfire browser installed and use that mobile web browser to view Facebook. When a Flash based video is detected, the app will allow you to view the vid.

Are you aware of any froyo apps that have full excel capability? DataViz does not support drop downs and autofilters. I am using a sheet that configures seating sytems for childrens wheelchairs and would like to get away from hauling my laptop with me, so I’ve been waiting on the Archos 43 with 2.2 to be released.

Thanks!

I have not tried these apps for the particular features you want, but aside from Documents to Go there is Quickoffice ConnectMobileSuite $9.99 and OfficeSuite Pro $14.99.

I just updated a few apps in the Market on my phone and the update all option is there… I guess they put it back…

I am using Android 2.3 on my Nexus One (Cyanogenmod 7 nightly) with the new market and I most definitely do have an “Update all” button if there is more than one update available that doesn’t require a manual update. It’s at the top now instead of the bottom.

The updated Android Market on my Nexus S (version 2.2.11) has an update all, but only if there are multiple apps. It’s at the top of the “My Apps” section just under the title bar.

Rings extended was written by Dianne Hackborn one of the main Android engineers. The reason it’s not included by default is that Google wanted a simple ringtone chooser by default.
