Ask NerdGirl: MyTouch Will Get 2.2, Keep Gmail Contacts Away, Echo Echo, Confused Battery, and We Might Have a Convert!

We have a wide range of questions today, and I think it’s great!

How can I upgrade my MyTouch 3G to android 2.1 Eclair, or 2.2 Froyo?

Word on the street is that your MyTouch will be getting 2.2 over the air! It seems that T-Mobile decided to skip 2.1 entirely and just get to the best there is right now. They released a memo that states that the 3G will be getting the update to go along with their “no phone left behind” mentality now. If you don’t want to wait, you can of course root the phone and get whatever version of Android you would like on your phone.

I personally would wait for the T-Mobile update. It looks like it’s going to add a bunch of features that the MyTouch 3G Slide will have right out of the box. If you root, since these aren’t released yet, you most likely won’t get these new things, like the Genius Button application and the Faves Gallery.

There’s no exact date yet, but in my book soon is far better than never!

Hello Nerdgirl,

First, thanks for your column. It’s most helpful!

How do I keep the Gmail contacts (the ones that are stored automatically) out of my phone?!?!!

I’m guessing what you’re looking for is how to stop your phone from syncing your Gmail contacts.

Here’s how:  Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync > Google

When you click on Google you’ll see “Sync Contacts” as the first listing. Uncheck the box next to it. That will prevent any changes you make to your phone from syncing to Google and vice versa. Now you can delete the contacts in your phone that you don’t need and you won’t see that information on Google.

Sometimes I notice an echo in the phone calls. I can hear my voice while speaking, with +/- 1sec lag. Is this software/hardware related?

This is cellular network related. I’ve been experiencing this randomly since my first StarTac cell phone. This annoying phenomenon is caused by misconfigured or broken echo quads. These devices are all over the network specifically to stop this from happening. This even happens on land lines and has been since the 1950s. The way to fix it on your end is to just hang up and call the person back to get yourself on a working circuit.

I own a Droid Eris..and recently got the first system update…(well first one since Christmas when i got the phone.)  Well….the update did some nifty things, such as adding navigation, and a few other tweaks…BUT…and a big but, my phone wont charge/ nor will it stay charged…and it’s really slow.  It’s pretty much pointless to try and text anyone…and it keeps calling people randomly…main thing being that it has NO charge…PLEASE HELP

This happened to me as well and I freaked out!  But don’t worry. The fix is simple.

What happened was the battery got confused on how much is full and how much is empty. Basically you have to drain the battery completely. By completely I mean really making sure that there’s no juice left. After it’s saying it’s dead, try to turn it on and make sure it can’t even power on. Then, while it’s off, charge it overnight to make sure it gets charged 100%! Then repeat the process. After the second time your battery should have become more stable and you should have your normal battery life back.

This seems to happen whenever there’s an Android update, such as 1.6 to 2.1. This doesn’t matter which phone it’s on.

I am considering moving from the Blackberry to Android Incredible. Does your product allow me to sync my calendar & outlooks from Microsoft Office 2007?

Rodger Cantrell

Do it! Your life will change forever, for the better! I love the HTC Droid Incredible and I am insanely jealous of those who have it. The only thing that keeps me sane is thinking of the amazing stuff that should be out when I’m eligible for an upgrade.

One of my favorite aspects of having an HTC phone is the HTC Sync. If you go to the HTC website you can download this free program and it will sync your Outlook to your phone when it detects your phone attached via USB. It works beautifully once it’s installed. The install can be a little troublesome.

I’ve fought with it a few times and as long as you make sure that there are no phone drivers on your computer before you install the HTC Sync, you should be fine. It sometimes also has trouble finding a ADB driver, depending on your operating system, at least with my Eris. A quick search on Google should find one for your phone if you run into this problem.

You cannot define explicitly which contacts are synch’ed or not, BUT you can go into Contacts->Menu->Display options and either tell the phone to show just contacts with phone numbers and/or define for each account (by tapping on it) what groups should be shown in the contact list.

    Hopes this helps :-)

Hey nerdgirl! I’ve been looking for the answer to this question and I just couldn’t find it. I think you might be the person to ask. My phone (the MyTouch) started updating this morning and the messaging, gallery, contacts, and a few other of the core apps are not working like they used to. The messaging isn’t even launching, only eight of my 150 some contacts are showing, and the gallery is running very very slowly. Is this a bad effect of the update? Or is it updating those applications still?
