Hi N3rd Girl,

Is there any app to save individual SMSs to the calendar as an event? I know there’s phone logger app and one other which saves all incoming SMSs to the calendar…but purpose here is not to save all, but only those I want. This will save me a lot of time as I get lot of reminders like bill payment on SMS, and would love to be able to set it up as an event with description from SMS.

I’m using Hero (2.1)

There is a way to do this. You can actually send a text to your Google calendar! Go to your Google Calendar on your computer and click Settings. Then, click on the Mobile Setup tab. Enter your phone number and click Send Verification Code. When you get the text message containing the code, type it into the box and click Finish Setup.

Now to send something to your calendar from your text, send a message to GVENT (48368). If you get a message from your phone company about a bill, forward it to GVENT and it will be in your calendar.

Hi Nerdgirl,

I travel a lot around the world and therefore can’t really use my carriers data roaming as the costs would be way too much. An added effect is that in most hotels I visit I only get a LAN cable to connect to the internet which sucks as then I can’t play around on the net over my phone (Nexus One – Android 2.2).

My question is: is there a way to connect my phone to my laptop and use the laptops internet connection to surf the net on my phone? So a kind of reverse tethering?

Yes, you can. You can share your internet connection on your laptop. These are instructions on how to do it for Windows 7 and Vista. Your laptop will have to be using a wired connection to do this!

Type “View Network Connections” in the search box in the Start menu and hit “Enter.”
Right click your wired connection and click “Properties.”
Click on the “Sharing” tab and uncheck all the boxes.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for your wireless connection.
Select both the wired and wireless connections at the same time (either Ctrl-A or drawing a box around both of them.)
Right click and select “Bridge Connections.” The computer will then setup a network bridge. When that is complete you’ll see a new icon called “Network Bridge.”
Close that window.
Click on the Network icon in your taskbar on the lower right of your screen.
In the box that pops up click on “Open Network and Sharing Center.”
In the new window click on “Setup new connection or network.”
Then, select “Set up a wireless Ad Hoc (Computer to Computer) network” and click Next.
Click Next again.
In the next window name your network and choose if you want security. If you do, create a password.
Select “Save this network for all users” and click Next.
The computer now makes a new connection and it will appear in the notification area of your desktop.
Now connect to your new network from your phone as you would any other wireless connection.

So, I read the article on this and was shocked. All I want to do is run my apps from my SD card on my Eris! I don’t want to root my phone. If Verizon doesn’t upgrade us to Froyo, will WE be able to get the update directly from Google? Thanks for looking into this for al us loyal Eris owners! Keep up the good work

We do not want 2.2 on our phones. Trust me. It’s not nearly powerful enough and it will make it seem even buggier. Think about it, you can’t run all of the functions that 2.1 is supposed to do. What do you think 2.2 would do to our phones?

Even though we want the newest and deserve it, there are good reasons why Verizon and Google are not putting 2.2 on the HTC Droid Eris.

I love your column, but as far I know ad-hoc WiFi does not yet work on (unrooted) Android phones. See http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=82 for the relevant entry in the Android issue tracker. I didn’t try it, but maybe http://connectify.me/ works. It creates a “normal”, non-ad-hoc hotspot if you have Windows 7 and one of the compatible WiFi cards.

  I’ve used a shared connection on my Evo using both my Macbook and my HP Pavillion desktop (for testing purposes) and no issues with either one. As long as you create a wireless connection to be shared with a compatible Wifi device from the computer you should be fine. No special software really needed for that. The issues comes in if your trying to use a wireless connection to receive internet and broadcast a signal at the time, which usually isn’t allowed unless you have a card that supports two connections at one time. Typically I have a wired connection to the computer and use the wireless card to broadcast the shared signal and BAM! Works great Each OS will have a slightly different way to enable sharing internet connections but should be fairly simple. I think that’s what the definition of “ad-hoc” is being referred to in this article.

Ask any rooted G1 user if 2.2 makes their phone worse off than 1.5. The functions which would make the phone buggier could be removed. The underlying OS is smoother and better at memory and CPU management. Just strip out the 3D graphics and keep the Chrome to Phone. It would be a good thing if they would release this.
