Ask NerdGirl answers user submitted emails, here is today’s round up. How to extend Android battery life, is Voice Search available for Android 2.1, how do I text multiple people, and where is Voice It Android app?
We just recently received Sprint’s Samsung Transform, I am not real “technical” and I have a few questions, we have downloaded several of the apps, and we are enjoying them, but the phone will not hold a charge, so I am thinking maybe we have too much, what is too much? and what should the phone be capable of handling? Someone mentioned that I should download “app killer” or something along that line, but when I was reading the reviews, it did not recommend this app for anything over a 2.1, but I have no idea if this phone is below or above this number, please help….I would love some recommendations or advice.

Barbara your Samsung Transform is preloaded with Android 2.1. FYI, you can find that information by going Settings » About phone » look under “Android version”.
Ideally your should last you the entire day, however, some Android apps that constantly check for updates in the background can tax the battery without you knowing it. The first thing I do with apps that depend on updates from the Internet such as Facebook is to take a trip into the Settings menu of the app and look for “update intervals”. By default most apps are somewhat overzealous with short update intervals, try extending that out if possible. Do this for each one of your apps.
You may have read on some of our reviews about “task killer” apps being OK for Android 2.1 and lower phones and not recommended for Android 2.2+ phones because in the latter Google’s operating system does an excellent job of managing memory. Plus task killers on these phones become counter productive.
I have a Samsung gt i5801, it has Eclair installed in it. It has no voice search in it, i tried to search over the market, but couldn’t help myself, my sister has a htc desire, it also has Eclair in it, but voice search is there in her android, Please help me…

Weird why it is not built into your phone’s OS versus separate app as Voice Search came with Android 1.6 (Cupcake). Not sure if this would help you Kumar but according to the new web-based Android Market Google released two Voice Search apps. One for Android 2.1 Eclair and the original one Google moved into the Android Market and it is only available for Android 2.2+ phones. Try to see if you can install this version from the web: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.voicesearch.x
To answer why your sister’s HTC Desire can access the app in the Market is because according to Eurodroid the HTC Desire got the Android 2.2 Froyo update, which is why is has access to the original Voice Search: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.voicesearch
Hello Nerdgirl,
I am trying to find an app (preferably free) that allows me to text to multiple people at one time and will allow me to set my text notification to silent mode. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
LynnMarie
Lynn Handcent SMS allows batch text messaging. In the settings menu you can set the ringtone to silent.
Hello Madam
The App – “ Voice it “
is not available on the market , ( its a Voice Reminder App, )
Where can I get it , or any alternate available
I am on “Samsung Epic 4G”
Thanks for your reply
Satish Dave, India
Sorry Satish this app is no longer available in the Android Market. Viewing the developers website doesn’t offer anyway to contact him either.
Some setting in my droid has turned on something which now has the phone saying “verizon wireless” everytime it rings; can you tell me what setting was changed and how to get rid of it?
Pam Bonner
Pam you can change you ringtone by going to Settings » Sound » Phone ringtone. Possible Update: Pam I just received a correction that this issue may be associated with Roaming settings. Find it in Settings » Wireless & network settings.
