Ask NerdGirl: How to Block Porn on Android, How Get Rid of Low Memory Warning and Any Good Free Corporate Email Apps?

Ask NerdGirl gives tips on how to block adult content on Android, when pestered by “Low Memory” warnings here’s how to get rid of it and are there any good free corporate email apps?

I have a Galaxy S phone with Verizon service. I am looking for a porn blocker app for my service?
Any suggestions.  I called Covenant Eyes and they say their app is for the I Phone only.

Jeff Ruge

Yes Android has apps with adult content in its market Jeff. According to a report by the end of 2010 there were nearly 14,000 adult apps. The challenge is to completely block them… Google recently added “content ratings” for all Android apps but has not implemented this filter feature for users. So unfortunately we will have to wait on Google to enable the filter. Jeff you’re in luck as there are a few workaround tips you can use to avoid content you deem objectionable on your Android phone:

How to Block Adult Websites from Android Web Browsers?

To filter adult content in web browser apps you can use Mobile Security & Antivirus which has parental controls plus backup and antivirus features for mobile.

How to Block Adult Apps from the Android Market?

The best way to block adult apps is to password protect access to the Android Market. I personally use Protector however App Protector works great as well. You can choose which apps or specific components of the app to password protect.

Be sure your phone doesn’t allow install of apps outside Google’s Android Market. To check that go to Settings » Applications » Manage applications and “Unknown sources” should not be checked.

Any Apps with Kid Friendly Interfaces?

If you have kids you can download Kid Mode: Play + Learn so you have less worry when you hand them your phone as this app is the only interface they can access. Plus it has content suitable to engage young ones.

Hi Nerdgirl,
I have a droid incredible and keep getting errors when I go to open my messages and it says my storage is full. Also, on the pull down screen it says low on space. I don’t understand what is causing this, I removed a lot of my apps and I just need to know how I can fix this issue with my phone.

Thank you,
Carol L. Beck

The dreaded “Low Memory” error message. Well Carol, it looks like you’ve filled your DROID Incredible‘s internal memory to the point where it halted itself and makes you remove some apps. Here are a few more tips to get rid of low memory warnings on Android.

Remove unnecessary apps

Your internal memory is shared with the core Android system plus installed apps and any data or cache needed. Ditch some of the unnecessary or large apps on your phone. The way to find large apps is to go to Settings » Applications » Manage applications » hit the Menu button and select “Sort by size”.

Move apps to SD Card

Not all Android apps support this as it is dependent on the actual developer of each app to enable this feature. However, if a large app has this feature then move the app to your SD card. To do this go to Settings » Applications » Manage applications » select an app then tap “Move to SD card”.

Clear stored data and cache

As a last resort you can clear stored data and cache from some apps. To do this go to Settings » Applications » Manage applications » select an app. Tapping “Clear cache” gets rid of cache so an app will have to re-download content that may have been cached. Tapping “Clear data” is risky as you’ll lose stored settings so this should only be done on rare occasions.

Hi All,

I had a question about getting an app for corporate email for my droid x. Currently i can use the corporate sync but that would cause my data plan to go up to $45. Is there an app available that will bypass me having to shell out an extra $15 a month for me to sync my work email to my phone?

Thanks,
Michael K.

K9 Mail is a free app that can connect to your corporate email. A bit on the techie side to setup but free.

Will the Protector app prevent porn from even showing up in the android market all together or will they still be able to see the pics when they look at the app info? Im looking for a way to prevent seeing the pics completely

In response to the last question posted by the guy with the corporate mail question: No. There isn’t an app that will bypass the data usage for the email. What you can do is set up your email on your phone to only sync every three hours and make sure that the box to automatically download all content is unchecked. That way you get the text and not the jpegs, pictures, banners, etc. If you are just looking for a free and easy corp mail, K-9 might be the way to go, but if you are looking to avoid the data usage, try what I just said.

I recently found a porn website had appeared on my husband’s google search history on his android phone and he swears up and down he has never seen it before. Can you tell me if this is even possible (supposedly) without searching it previously- or without searching similar content? Thank you for your time.

If it was in his history, more than likely it was searched for. There is a slim chance someone else that used his phone could have searched that term without him knowing at the time.

I was in the middle of a game on my android tablet when it exited to my android browser on a site full of porn photos. I can guarantee you that no one has ever searched for this on this tablet. So, you can be suspicious, but don’t head to the divorce lawyer.

lol. Your husband is lying. A search is a search. You type in ‘shaved teens’ thats that you get and that is saved in your history.

The best thing for this is the “add blocker” feature of the “ROM toolbox lite” app. However it requires root access.

Ok so I was looking at the pics on my hubbys phone and he has an Android. Under downloads I found a 16 min porn. He swears he did not download it or even know it was there. I went to his downloads and saw the date and time it was downloaded. He tells me I don’t trust him and his phone must have downloaded itself. Is this possible or is he trying to get out of trouble.

More than likely he visited the site and clicked on the video to play it and it downloaded to his phone and he didn’t notice that it downloaded versus streaming real-time.

@amy: I am 18 years old and im trying so hard to get rid of all porn and sexual imorality out of my life it is trying to ruin me. And I sure for sure that hes not telling the truth on that. That was not accidentally downloaded to his phone I know how these androids work. If it were to accidentally download he wouldve had visted a porn site anyway and thats only happens on a computer. It was not an accident I know for a fact because ive been there and done that. And if any of you guys are struggling with pornography and any sexual sin please I beg you please turn and run away from it, it will pull you in so deep.

Hello all, I know this an old forum however wanted to give some advice. There are a few Free apps that might help in the situation of blocking adult content.

Free K-9 web protection browser, and one for your desktop PC.

You can block the web browser entirely by downloading any app blocker and blocking the web browser and app store with a password.

There are other adult content blockers and you just have to search for them.

Is there a way to block porn completely on a android phone that isn’t an app? I have sprint and I can not find a way to block it since it is a smart phone. Please help. Or if not is there a really good app that is 100% sure it will block all porn sites without paying?

@Sarah unfortunately you cannot completely block it on Android-powered smartphones. With the use of other apps is how you get the maximum results, and the app recommended is the best we’ve seen thus far, and the full protection is only free for a limited time- thus you will have to pay a subscription. :(
