Ask NerdGirl: Genres, No Sleep, Nexus One and Hero Updates!

What I’ve been wondering lately is are we going to lose Android people to the new iPhone?

Hi there,
Love reading all of your questions and answers on all things android.

I am a fairly technical guy and decided to root my Moto Droid to get wifi tethering. I am using the Bugless Beast ROM which is based off cyanogen rom.

Somewhere along the line of trying different ROMs, the power button no longer locks my phone. When the phone is unlocked, nothing happens when I press the power button. (I would like to lock my screen and put my phone back in my pocket). Holding down the button brings up the power menu. Also, once the phone is locked, I can press the power button and it cycles between screen on and off.

I even used the ROM manager to revert back to stock 2.1 and power button problem persist. All other ROMs have this problem and I think it is not a hardware problem.

But not being able to lock my screen is driving me bonkers.

Any thought or suggestions?

Thanks!

There’s a nifty little free app called Spare Parts. This app has some settings that you normally can’t access. One of these happens to be “End button behavior.” From there you can make it do nothing, go to home, go to sleep, and home, then sleep. I would try this before anything else. Otherwise, it could be a firmware flaw, not Android itself. This would go under warranty repair, so if Spare Parts doesn’t work that would be the next step.

Hi,

I have transferred some Flac music files to my memory card and have downloaded the Meridian Music Player onto my Motorola Milestone. Unfortunately the Player does not register the files in the Genre, Albums or Artists section under the Music option. Only when I use the Browser option can I see the music and play it. Any suggestions for setting up the music library in the Music section? I use JRivers Media Jukebox 12 for the tags on my PC.  Would really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Jitain

All of the music players that I know of have the Genres sorting included. There are some known issues with the genres disappearing or renaming themselves. This seems to happen because there are different versions of the ID3 tags in your library. The ID3 tags is how media players know the title, artist, genre, etc. You can fix this pretty easily using your media player on your computer.

I ordered the Nexus One which I love by the way.  I’m just curious if you have any idea when does 2.2 Froyo will be the released for the Nexus One?

A few weeks back there was a premature release of Android 2.2 (Froyo) for some Nexus One owners OTA (over the air). We, the Android community of websites, got so excited and didn’t bother waiting… we even placed a guide and download/install instructions here on AndroidTapp. But again, it was premature and Google pulled the official update. If you do decide to manually install the update the only caveat is that not all applications can be found in the Market. Lastly, there is currently a rumor that a new OTA update is rolling out to users, so we’ll watch and see in the next few weeks how that pans out.

Hello Nerdgirl!

Enjoying your column and it’s short but informative format very much, so first of all thanks :)

And to the question – I have an HTC Hero which I bought in the UK and brought with me to Israel. I’ve been very frustrated to find out that the long-awaited update to 2.1 is for the Sprint Hero.

Is there any talk of a similar update for the standard Hero? And just to make sure – I can’t manually update my phone using the official Sprint ROM, can I?

Thanks!

Alon

Well, unfortunately it’s still listed as “Coming Soon.” So it’s coming, but no one knows when. Now you have to assume that the update has to be coming sooner rather than later because 2.2 was just released. Taiwan just got it so it’s making it way around the globe.

Keep sending those questions to nerdgirl@androidtapp.com!

Regarding the FLAC files not showing: fixing the ID tags alone won’t help, as the Android Music DB doesn’t index FLAC files.

The only way out would be installing System FLAC support (german instructions and the necessary files can be found on http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-hacking-modding-fuer-motorola-milestone/17263-howto-browser-lag-fix-flac-support.html ) – I wouldn’t recommend it though, as FLAC doesn’t run very well in the 2.1 system music player (also the installation process requires root and bears a slight chance of bricking yopur phone).

I’ve decided to live with using the Browser in Meridian, hoping either a future version of Meridian or Android will fix the problem.

After decades of making mix tapes just about the only thing I care about in a music player is that it can understand and use the Play lists that I have created in Windows media player. Is there a media player that can sync or use my play lists. If I have to manually edit the code of the play lists what changes are needed.
