Ask NerdGirl: Can I Get Full Flash in Android 2.1 Browser, How to Root LG Ally, Best Android Apps for Editing Office Documents, and How to Turn on Facebook Notifications

Ask NerdGirl hosts a Q&A for… Can I get full Flash in Android 2.1 browser? How to Root LG Ally, what are the best Android apps for editing Office documents, and how to turn on Facebook notifications.

Hello,

I have purchased 2 Android tablets running Android 2.1. The are MID brand that I bought through LightInTheBox.com. I need for them to run Flash Player for my daughter’s online game sites (specifically www.toontown.com). I seemingly was successful installing Flash player for Mobile on the tablets but each time I go to the Toontown site I get the message that I need “Flash to use this site”. My tablet indicates that Flash player is running but Toontown and other sites that I know are running Flash don’t show me the Flash content. My question is, can I get these flash-based games to run on my 2.1 tablets or is the version of Flash that Adobe has made available not going to allow that? Or have I not actually installed Flash successfully and these sites SHOULD run? Also, if 2.1 can’t run flash player, would upgrading to 2.2 or 2.3 provide better results? By the way, I did install Skyfire browser on the tablet and that had the same results.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Tom Daddario

Update: You can install Adobe Flash on Android 2.1 (Eclair). Just follow the instructions here: How To: Install Flash 10.1 On Android 2.1 Eclair Devices

Thanks Dave for that tip!

The answer is to upgrade to Android 2.2+ Tom. It wasn’t until this version that Android fully supported Flash in the browser. Prior to this there was only a partial workaround to view Flash based videos in Skyfire browser.

Howdy!

I recently jumped ship from Apple and secured for myself a shiny Nexus
S. The freedom of Android is a bit daunting, particularly considering
the restrictions and heavy-handedness of the iOS. My question concerns
editing Office documents on Android. I saw that Google introduced line
edits through the browser, but I want a dedicated app with some
offline, sync-pending workability. Is there anything to suit my needs
in the Android wilderness? I used Documents to Go premium on the
iphone, but it was buggy and pretty wonky when it came to recognizing
anything from OpenOffice (even documents saved as word files by
OpenOffice). I hesitate to jump back onto DocstoGo with Android
because of my subpar iOS experience with them…but casual browsing
has not shown me many alternatives.

Your thoughts or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Jay aside from Documents to Go there is Quickoffice ConnectMobileSuite $9.99 and OfficeSuite Pro $14.99.

How do I turn on the notification sound for the facebook app on my droid 2?? Notification pops up top but no sound.
Kimberly Haile

Open the Facebook app, if it shows your Wall tap the Facebook logo to go to screen with all features like News Feed, Profile, Friends, etc. Tap the Menu button then Settings. Ensure “Notifications” are checked then under “Notification ringtone” choose a ringtone, by default it is set to Silent.
