Ask NerdGirl Android question asks and answers the best email Android apps for IMAP, speeding up my G1… should I root it? In need of reliable Bluetooth voice dialing app, and downloading not stream videos.
Since recently purchasing my HTC Desire HD I was surprised that all the email clients I can find are so primitive. I use IMAP to read my mail and I thought a Android phone would be ideal to read my mail on the go. But so far I’ve been very disappointed.
None I’ve found seem to have the message rules feature, so I can’t get my email sorted into folders or colour tagged like I do in Thunderbird.
Is there any mail app doing this feature?
Is it likely that a version of Thunderbird will be ported to Android?
Many thanks.

Stuart two of our fav Android apps come to mind and they both handle IMAP very well with folder integration. Those two are K9 Mail and Exchange by Touchdown. Neither handle all Microsoft Exchange grade rules however the latter handles more than 20 rules. Give either a shot! BTW, we haven’t heard word of Thunderbird for Android… why Mozilla is still struggling to get a stable & speedy version of Firefox ported to Android.
Hello Nerdgirl,
I have T-Mobile G1 1.6, which is slow, alway forced to close and low memory.
I would to root and change to better ROM but recommend by other G1 users and Youtube,
all site I go on not working anymore. I ask if maybe you help me and tell me what where to
go online or what to do. I am not ready to buy a new phone, I actually like my phone.

We try to recommend rooting especially for newbies as a last resort for first generation phones like the beloved G1. Before rooting, how about you try some performance boosting tips we’ve written a while back for early Android phones. Second, get rid of unneeded apps! Third, I would recommend a factory reset and start fresh. If you must root, follow this guide How To: Root the HTC G1/Dream and be aware of the pros and cons plus we’re not responsible if you brick your phone.
Hi,
I have had my EVO for several months now and I have not found a reliable bluetooth voice dialing program. I’ve tried Choice Dialer, Vlingo and Google Voice Commands and some others that I don’t recall their names. None of them read my voice correctly. They either dial the wrong contact or they don’t understand me. I don’t have an accent and I have a normal volume voice (I’m not soft spoken nor loud).
This is frustrating because my previous two phones, both on Windows Mobile, worked flawlessly. They date back to 2005! I have tried my old headsets and even purchased a new one in vane.
Any suggestions?

That’s unfortunate creekside we’ve run out of suggestions. You went through my logical recommendation order that has worked for myself personally and others. The only other device/software combo we’ve tested at AndroidTapp.com that works despite noise conditions was the BlueAnt Q1 Bluetooth headset (note: they’ve succeeded this product with the Q2 which is powered by Vlingo). However we see your frustration of buying yet another Bluetooth which may or may not help you. It seems our Android platform has failed you. Anyone have any suggestions?
I have the Samsung Acclaim and it won’t download videos or save them to my phone it will stream videos just won’t download please help

Kraven I’m assuming you’re referring to YouTube videos streaming and not downloading. This is done by design, there were a few Android apps for downloading YouTube videos but all have gotten banned because they violate the Android Market agreement. The new kid on the block is TubeMate – YouTube Downloader, we’ll see how long this app lasts before it’s yanked so download it quickly!
