Ask NerdGirl: 3.0 Devices Announced Already? Text Sounds, PC to Phone Installs, Change Your Name, Auto Link Contacts, and EVO Fails at Exchange!

I just did a huge update on the largest and most complete Android Device List on the Internet last night and there are actually devices on there that will be launching with 3.0 (Gingerbread). Froyo hasn’t even made a dent yet with less than 2% of Android devices running something above 2.1 and they’re announcing 3.0 devices already! Amazing how fast technology progresses!
For anyone wondering if their device will be upgraded to a newer version of Android this is the place to check first. We keep this as up to date as possible with frequent revisions.
How do I change the sound for when you get a text?
The easiest way is to go to into your Messaging program and hit Menu then Settings. In there you can scroll down and select the ringtone for messaging.
I now have a Sprint HTC. I am lucky to be able to turn it on as I formally had AT&T Pearl with no features. I have no knowledge of programming a phone. I have seen various Apps like Astor and numerous others that appear to offer some help with files. I received a file I purchased from radiotime, a file that would let me hear Radio Stations all over the USA. I wanted to place this file on my Sprint HTC and my PC but I have no idea how to do this. I have read various articles on doing this, but after reading I am still lost. I am retired Military, but was not schooled in the APK world. Can someone set this up so that I can copy to my phone or set it up where I may copy it from my PC to Phone? I just do not have the knowledge to accomplish this. I am 80 and still trying to learn new things.

Congrats on your new phone! My father is 86 and I just got him an Eris, his first cell phone ever.
Since you have an HTC phone, you have it a little easier than others. You can go to http://www.htc.com/us/support and select your device. After you select your device and click the arrow next to the selection, click on the Downloads tab. Then click on Download under the program called HTC Sync. Install that and when you connect your phone it will detect it. One of the options in the program is Application Installer. Click on that and it will walk you through putting software on your phone.
The APK file that you received cannot be used on your PC. You can simply listen to the stations directly from their website.
After being unhappy with an application I purchased from the market place I left a comment on it. However the name that was displayed with my comment was not my own but it is something my friends call me. I wish to change this back to my name but can’t seem to find out where to do this.
This is a setting through Google. So log into Google (not Gmail). Go to Settings in the very top right and click on Google Account Settings. Click on Public Profile and under the “About Me” tab you should be able to set the display name you would like.
Greetings! While searching for an answer to my app question I have yet to find an answer to, I came across your site.
I have had my HTC incredible for a week now. Love it! Switched from Blackberry. I want to auto link my people, but can’t find a way to do so. Having 430 contacts and manually doing each one is a PITA. Do you have suggestions or advice?
Thanks a bunch!

I’m thinking you mean auto link with other profiles. Facebook should do this pretty much automatically. Once you go into a contact that it recognizes needs to be linked when you click to link it, normally it says something about “There are 267 other contacts” and it will go through and link them all.
If it doesn’t do that, go into your Gmail on a computer and click on “Contacts”. Click on “My Contacts” and you will see on the left “Find Duplicates.” If there are any you can merge them together there.
The Facebook link doesn’t work perfectly so don’t be surprised if it takes some time for the contact list in your phone to match up correctly.
Hi Nerd Girl,
I read your article on a regular basis and like the information you provide. I don’t know where else to turn with an Exchange e-mail issue on my EVO 4G and hope you can help:
I have successfully synced my Exchange account using HTC ActiveSync software
I have set my mailbox to download all e-mail (no attachments) regardless of size
I have set my mailbox to receive e-mail as it arrives
I can read most of my e-mail
Some inbox e-mail does not display (i.e. it will show some of today’s e-mail, show some of yesterday’s e-mail, possibly skip a day)
I have looked all over to see if other people are having this issue but don’t see anyone discuss the issue.
Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Kartik
First things first, if you’re using Office 2010, it is not fully supported yet so keep that in mind.
Secondly, the bad news. There are a ton of known issues with the EVO, Exchange problems being one of them. However, there is a patch coming this month (last I heard) that will fix some of these issues. One of them is the issue you are seeing so you’re not alone.
