Army of Darkness Defense is a game based on the early 90′s cult movie “Army of Darkness”. You assume the role of Ash Williams, a 20th century a guy who has found himself in medieval era, as he fights wave after wave of ‘deadites’. The game falls neatly into the ‘defense‘ genre, much like recently reviewed Wars Online and Royal Revolt! However, Army of Darkness is chock full of quotes from the film, features cool units and a number of crazy weapons, in addition to awesome graphics and addictive gameplay. It really just works on a variety of levels…

Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Brilliant graphics!
- Loads of great weapons and units!
- Immaculate soundtrack!
- Massively addictive!
Features:
Army of Darkness Defense is a standard linear tower defense game where you defend a tower against oncoming baddies. At your disposal you have your trusty shotgun “Boomstick!” and a chainsaw. As you progress you can add all manner of units to your army- peasants, soldiers, archers and more powerful characters from the original film including Lord Arthur and Duke Henry. You send these into battle based on the productivity of your smithy- he creates metal in order to generate units, the more powerful the unit the more metal is required. The game has a perfect learning curve and you end up being really sucked into the highly addictive gameplay.
The highlight for me was the sound effects, including new music and more than 100 sound bites and quotes from the original film, the game has real atmosphere and lots of humour. The funnies play on the clash of medieval culture and the 20th century technology. One weapons, for example lets you fire an Oldsmobile car right into the oncoming enemies, this is in addition to using guns and chainsaws on them. It really is brilliantly silly and yet wonderful to play.
The game is a freemium, but the developers (Backflip Studios who made Paper Toss and NinJump) deserve a massive round of applause for executing the freemium model perfectly with Army of Darkness. The game is undoubtedly of very high quality but it also gives you plenty of gameplay for free. I found it to be a game I wanted to make in-app purchases in and found that small purchases go a very long way indeed. I am usually incredibly cynical about these kind of games but you genuinely feel like you’re getting value for money with Army of Darkness Defense.
There are 50 levels to wade through and levels get progressively trickier. With coins (collected and bought) you can upgrade your units to be more effective, most importantly Ash himself, and yet you still need to use strategy and additional weapons to defeat the armies. Most things are upgradeable to make sure you invest in the most effective.
I have found myself playing this game a lot, it’s certainly not an easy game to put aside, so it’s great if you especially enjoy addictive games full of humour and impressive visuals.

Fun Factor:
The combination of the humour, sound, graphics and addictive gameplay, the game is lots of fun and very rewarding. There are 50 levels as of today and I think I’m on the 45th!! Considering I’m a reviewer and have played far more games than I care to remember, that’s saying something!
Addictive:
Army of Darkness Defense is incredibly addictive and very hard to put down. The learning curve is perfect, meaning you get extremely engrossed and competitive quickly.
Graphics:
The graphics are 2D but have a rich depth to them which works perfectly with this genre of strategy gaming. They are also rich with detail and colour, making it a joy to play and very immersive.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is absolutely top notch. Taking more than 100 quotes and sound effects from the original film, it adds a whole new dimension to gameplay and really sets it apart.
