Armored II: Tower Defense is a lethal battle tower defense game for Android. Offering a few unique cues over other games of the popular genre, earn and invest cash into your weaponry and defend your base from waves of enemy baddies.
Price: Free, $2.99
Tested on: Nexus One
Content Rating: Low Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- An addictive tower defense game with key differences: large field maps, railways for towers, bombers and minefields!
Cons
- Very repetitive.
- Menu system, tutorial and instructions can be convoluted.
- The free version has too much in the way of distraction, leaves feeling of being forced to purchase just to get rid of all the adverts.
Features:
Tower defense games are very popular for mobile gaming platforms due to how addictive they are and Armored II: Tower Defense makes no exception. There are a few key differentiators here though, such as the large field maps (approximately 6-8 times the size of a normal map with 3x zoom and scroll features), railways for towers to roll on & fire from, air bombers and minefields! The goal is to eliminate each and every wave of attackers of various strength from invading your base, racking up achievements along the way.
You start with 3 towers: heat seeking rockets, gunner, and the laser; which you position on ridge tops & gorge cliffs. These can be upgraded in two ways, either by purchasing weapons with higher fire power frequency rates or increasing their firing range. As you succeed in taking out enemies you are awarded money to invest in your hardware. Terrain is deep and intricate, laying rails over canyons gives your towers more room to fire. Foes get tricky too… there is ‘The Tortoise’ shell that protects smaller tankers, some have a brief ‘Stealth’ mode, some tankers self repair, and some aren’t affected by missiles. For your convenience, you can press the ‘fast forward’ button in the bottom left to speed things up, even pause or slow things down.
Aside of the main features there is not much here. Armored II: Tower Defense loops the same loop and can gets really repetitive. I might add that the freebie version supports Papaya for social gaming with friends, but this version is a smorgasbord of mobile advertising gone bad. If you love the gameplay but can tolerate the adverts it makes you want to purchase the full version just to ditch the fuss. Lastly, I find the menu system quite convoluted… best to read this review and/or watch the video below for a good crash course on how to play.
