Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • A range of buildings, decorations and other stuff to unlock as you level up!
  • New quests at each new level to keep it interesting!
  • A good FAQ at the beginning to walk you through game mechanics!

Cons

  • The Facebook connect wasn’t working for me.
  • Energy runs out quick.
  • I’m still not sure how to get the correct elements to complete some buildings without having friends give them to you, if at all.

Features:

Aqua City is the newest game from Animoca, the developers of the Pet Cafe, Pretty Pet Salon series and other Android games. In it, you’re given a small settlement between the underwater cities of Atlantis and Ys, with the goal of building it into another great city. To do that, you build homes and businesses, add decorations, and expand your borders as you level up and unlock more items.

Each level has its own new set of quests, which is nice. Even if you ran out of things to do, you know that it’s just a matter of leveling up again and then you’ll have a whole new set of quests to work on. There are a variety of characters that enter your city as it grows, so you get a semi-story line and quests geared toward each of them.

One issue I did have is that the Facebook connect, which is supposed to let you see if your friends are also playing, and/or invite them to play, didn’t work for me. It took me to a loading page, then right back to the screen where it invited me to connect my accounts. I tried it a few times, a few different ways, and none of them worked. (As an aside, I got the same screen when trying to take screenshots, which is unusual. Apparently the game doesn’t play well when something else attempts to run in the background – which is why, instead of my usual screen shots from my own game, I’m using the developer’s promo shots below.)

I also found that I ran out of energy quickly after the first few levels, and had to step away and come back to do anything more. But that’s more or less par for the course in this type of city-building app, so it wasn’t unexpected. I was confused when I hit a quest that required me to have certain additional materials to complete, but as far as I could tell, there’s no way to actually get those materials. You can ask friends to gift it to you, but seeing as I couldn’t get the friend connect to work, I was unable to obtain the materials that way. I’d like to see the game offer a way to collect those materials in-game, as well as get them as gifts if you have friends who play games and are willing to give them. It would make it a better experience for those of us who play games in a vacuum most of the time.

Fun Factor:

If you like city-building games, then you’ll like this one. It’s very similar to other types, in that you have quests to go on, and various building types to place, and you have to farm different crops to stock the businesses, etc., only this one is underwater.

Addictive:

I’m a sucker for this type of game, so I’ll keep playing it for a while, until I run into something that irritates me. Like not being able to get the materials to complete certain buildings.

Graphics:

The graphics are cute and cartoony, and very similar in look and feel to most of the other games in this genre. I liked the added touch of fish and sea creatures swimming through your city.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Since this is a casual game, meant for playing a little, then walking away and coming back multiple times per day, it doesn’t really take full advantage of these areas. It doesn’t use the accelerometer or any vibration, and the soundtrack is okay. It’s the kind of soundtrack I mute pretty quickly, since it doesn’t add anything, and I want to be able to check my city without broadcasting that fact to everyone standing nearby.

Should you Download Aqua City? This is a pretty good example of a city-building/farm game overall. It has a few points that make it stand out, but things like the inability to actually use or dependence on Facebook connect, and through that, the inability to find friends and actually get the materials to finish some buildings, detracts from the enjoyment pretty fast. If the developer can fix the quirk that prevents the game from working when anything tries to run in the background – even its own queries to other apps – then it will be a great game. Even so, it’s worth checking out if you enjoy this genre.
