Google’s Android is constantly compared against Apple’s iPhone in the next level smartphone wars. Today in Apple’s press event they revealed multi-tasking for the next version of iPhone software and mobile ads stemming from the purchase of Quattro Wireless. Multi-tasking and customization as been the biggest crutches to the iPhone; now with this addition it is taking a power punch at Android. However it will not be available to iPhone 3G.

What are your thoughts? Were you an iPhone fan and jumped to Android due to lack of Multi-tasking? If so, would you switch back because of it?

I certainly like the idea of sharing APIs amongst applications to save battery life. But somehow this all doesn’t come off as true multitasking – just fast application switching. In fact they even called it that at one point (maybe it was on one of the slides, I was watching the liveblog on gdgt.com). But do the apps continue to process in the background? Will it keep loading a web page even though I just switched over to my Facebook App? And that whole thing about not making the user manage the tasks running in the background – 10 to 1 one of the first apps developers will make is a task killer.

I wonder how sluggish this upgrade will really make the iPhone 3GS. No where near as bad as my CLIQ I hope. Open one too many apps on it and it’s time for a reboot.

Good on Apple for acknowleding they aren’t the first to do some things (cut and paste, ‘multi-task’, etc.). I hope it turns out really well and keeps pushing competition along.

I switched from iPhone to Android. Multitasking was a big consideration but not the only one. The iTunes ball-and-chain is an issue as is the App Store’s secretive policies. While this will make things better for iPhone users it still doesn’t fix so much of what’s broken about the platform.
