When Google unveiled the Nexus One, the superphone was forecasted as being the “iPhone Killer”. As impressive as the hardware marriage with is powerful Android software is; Google’s choice on distribution and marketing of it hindered main stream adoption for it to claim its crown. To date you cannot simply go into a store to check out the phone and features whereas you only can purchase online. Also Google introduced a habit-breaking consumer concept to buy unsubsidized phones full price offering cost savings long term.
Enters the 4G HTC Evo for Sprint. Its form factor is similar to the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile smartphone; solid, light and huge touch screen. What make it an iPhone Killer is its features; first phone to run on a 4G network in the U.S. offering speeds 10 times faster than 3G, 1Ghz processor fully capable of running Google’s latest Android software, and the largest touch screen display at 4.3 inches. It is a total mobile multimedia hub with 2 digital cameras (a 1.3 megapixel forward facing camera for video calls and 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash), records 720p HD video, plays back HD video on phone as well as to a TV via HDMI out, and is a mobile 4G hotspot for up to 8 devices.
The most important reason it will dominate the iPhone will be the distribution and marketing. Unlike the Nexus One consumers will be able to go to Sprint stores this summer and pick up the phone, ask questions, check out features and receive carrier subsidy on price. Sprint is already aggressively promoting 4G or WiMAX network coverage at an undisclosed amount. In a report recently compared we’ve seen Android smartphones slightly outselling iPhones due to Verizon’s 100 million advertising campaign of the DROID.
Like clock work, we expect Apple to unveil the latest iPhone in June. Hopefully they will step up their game now that many handset makers embedding Android are clawing at their smartphone dominance daily.
These are my personal thoughts with the growth of Android and the positioning with this phone… what are yours? Do you agree or think I’m absolutely insane… share in the comments below!
