Android Developers: Move App to SD Card Feature in Android 2.2 Requires You

This is a PSA to Android Developers. Some of us lucky folks are enjoying Android 2.2 on our Nexus One phones. :P We want to take advantage of “Move App to SD Card” feature in the software build but run into a snag as Google made it so developers have to enable the feature. So virtually no app is available for this as the SDK only became available last week.

I, we, understand why they have done this as some developers may not want to have their app running from SD Card which could possibly lead to piracy. But

So I, we, emplore you to get the new SDK and get those apps updated so we can download and buy more of your apps and games. Game developers, now is the prime time to build and sell us those high-end 3D games as we now have a minimum of 2 gigabytes to play with!

We updated Mole Miner today. It was originially 13 MB. It’s now 5.5 MB, and installs by default on the SD card. Can’t get it any smaller without losing the 87 screens ;)

This is really exciting. I heard that the capability was on the horizon, so hopefully it will be available for my Samsung Moment in the very near future. I was going to update my phone to 2.1 later today, but I think I’ll just wait for 2.2, if it’s coming really soon. No more having to uninstall one app in order to get another. But like you said, we are at the mercy of the developers to implement the SDK. Since most of the apps that I have are free, I’m hopeful that their developers will help me out and make them transferable to my SD card, so I can get more apps and more apps. I just love variety. :)

Yes developers please implement this on all your apps.

If you allow ‘Move to SD’, that will give android users more incentive to download/purchase your app without worrying about space.

I probably won’t purchase games that dont support move to sd now.

I finally have an app allowing me to move to the SD card. The most recent version of Urban Spoon gives me the option. To bad it’s not one of the storage hungry apps :(

Yes! I’ve been waiting for the option for so long, after failing to write a Java script to allow me to do it anyway!

Can I just ask that if developers do it with their apps, when you update it, can you put it into the App info on Market?
