Aloqa – Always Be A Local Install

Aloqa proactively pushes real time recommendations to mobile users. Wherever they are, based on their preferences and social graph, users can simply glance at their phones and find which friends, favorite businesses, events like music concerts, and local offers are close by, without having to launch a browser or search app.

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features:

Aloha Aloqa! This app is like uLocate’s WHERE app with pizazz. This GPS based location app brings what the app refers to as channels to you. Find the nearest Starbucks, gas stations, theaters, bars & night clubs, shopping centers, Facebook friends vicinity, and more.

The best feature is that it brings nearby attractions to you in various ways: ring, no ring, vibrate when near events, simply turn channels off or add new ones. Another cool feature is the “Family Fun” channel which sums up family friendly activities. Being in Chicago, especially in the summertime, there are a wealth of things to do (geez… I sound like my city’s major pitching the Olympic bid… speaking of… go Chicago 2016!). Therefore Aloqa Android App pulls up those event plus more unknown.

Gripe Alert: I did not see in the settings where you can change your location, useful to see nearby channels where you’re going to be in addition to where you are currently. Caution: leaving this app on can drain the poor G1 battery life.

Usefulness:

Aloqa Android App is useful for mobile users as it brings events and activities nearby to you versus you going to get the information.

Ease of Use & Interface:

The app is simple, organized and intuitive. Definitely optimized for mobile use.

First let me say, Aloqa is a great mobile application – useful and stylish.
My experience with the battery runtime are a bit different.
Running aloqa in the background almost does not suck more energy than usual.
Viewing the events and locations aloqa offers, sucks the battery in the same way like browsing the internet does (3G connections suck :) .
if you turn off the gps locationing on the g1 (in cities this is sufficient enough) saves energy, too.

This app is simply amazing O_o
Sometimes I feel like the future has started and nobody told me. The UI of Aloqa is really slick, the developers seem to really understand touch-interaction with all that swiping. Also, albeit not complete, the content they show me is fantastic and relevant, and every time I browse the list of available channels there seem to be a few more.
In short: Try it out, or miss out. Also, it’s free.

      @fortune
just go in the Android-Marketplace and search for ‘aloqa’.
      … that’s all.

I have been using this off and on and have to say the app is sweet, yet there are glaring holes in the data presented. I use Where as well, and Where – at least for central Connecticut area – seems to have more comprehensive information. For example ALOQA does not have the movie theater I go to most often (it’s a main stream, first run theater, nothing goofy).

You can change your location in Aloqa – Press Menu, then select Go to (magnifying glass icon). It works well. Perhaps this feature was added after the review was written. You can also tweak how frequently Aloqa uses GPS, even to the point of turning it off.

The UI is sweet, but I think I will continue to use Where together with Aloqa. 4 stars, 5 if the data were better. (By comparison, I’d give Where 4 stars too, 5 if it’s UI was better!)
