AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Download and read books on your cell phone.
  • Thousands of books to download from many resources, most for free.
  • Can save you money versus hard/paperbacks or Kindle.

Cons

  • Some may gripe it doesn’t support other eBook formats, it supports ePub which offers thousands of titles.

Features:

Aldiko Book Reader Android App is a bookworm’s dream! Read your favorite books from your Android phone with clarity and cool features.

Features read progress bars, day/night background themes, swipe/tapp page advance, dictionary lookup, word search, bookmarking, sharing, and settings menu to control screen brightness and more.

Personally I hate reading books unless forced. I can’t remember the last time I voluntarily read an entire book… unless it’s on a monitor… I ain’t reading it!  :-P  But this app easily encourages you to read books on the small screen. BTW, I’m reading H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man… what are you reading with Aldiko on your Android phone? (Comment Below)

Usefulness:

Aldiko Book Reader Android App is very useful, infinitely valuable to those who love to read.

Ease of Use:

Intuitive… really easy to use… even offers popup help hints.

Frequently Used:

User dependent, anywhere from sparingly to multiple use daily.

Interface:

The user interface is sweet (two-fold); the catalog area has a nice modern book shelf theme featuring all your eBooks (reminds me of Borders), when reading a book you have crystal clear and well spaced text.

My only complaint is that there doesn’t seem to be any difference between the Free version and the Premium version. I don’t mind supporting the creator(s), but if you’re going to call it “Premium”, it should be somehow better than the standard version. Also, I’m having a weird bug where titles on the Recent Reads shelf are rendered in spaces and periods.

Are there significant differences with FBreader, which is free?

Great app. I haven’t got it to read all of my old epubs just yet, but I think it’s probably just a matter of getting them into the right folder arrangement.

    mwd:
There aren’t a whole lot of significant differences. I personally think the interface is much more polished. But Aldiko is free as well, unless you decide to pay for it (the free and paid versions are identical)

Did you figure out how to read EPUB files that you had previously acquired? I don’t see an option to open files that are not already on the bookshelf? I like the reader a lot but want to be able to transfer EPUB files that I already have on my computer to my Droid X and then read them with Aldiko. Any advice will be appreciated.

Put your existing, non-DRMed epubs in the import directory, then from bookshelf view press import. It adds the content of the folder int your collection

This is a brilliant find! Thanks for reviewing the app in such detail. I was quite surprised to find an eBook app for Android (for some reason thought that was the domain of Kindle and other eBook readers) – I think I might try the Art of War (or Disappearing Completely) as they both feature as popular books.

Can you search by book title or are you limited to searching through the titles they have listed? Also, can you read about the book before downloading?

Thanks for the review. One bit of information that I am unable to get anywhere is: which dictionary does it look up? Does it connect to an online dictionary – in which case internet connection must be working to use dictionary. Or does it only have an inbuilt dictionary – in which case it is fixed. Or can it take external dictionary? Like there are many dictionaries available which work for mobireader.

It reffers you to an online dictionary on Google’s website, see how it looks in this screenshot: http://www.androidtapp.com/aldiko-book-reader/aldiko-book-reader-dictionary-definition/

I’m the one who is very eager to make the best use of the app. Aldiko. Reading books is so much a part of my life that I was very happy to find out the application Aldiko in my Gallaxy S, newly-born Samsung’s smartphone. These days I am so depressed ’cause it takes much time to open my books in the Aldiko. Delaying time makes me so boring and not appealled to the Aldiko. Why does it so much time to open the books? How can I fix the problem concerning the delaying time? I want to know the way to solve this problem. Do other smart-phone open the book in Aldiko so quickly? Please let me know the solution related to the delaying time? Thanks.

BLOATED! The latest V2 is bloated because of Adobe DRM.

Avoid going to version 2.1 – its definitely a backward step, lots of new features, but now is very slow to use. Size has increased dramatically to > 8Mb. Real pity, it was such a good app before this upgrade.
