In this game your elements are animals and “genes”, and new breeds are created by adding a trait of one creature to another, for example:
- Ant + Rat [Tailed] = Scorpion (an arthropod with a tail)
- Anchovy + Chicken [Domestic] = Golden Carp (a domestic fish)
- Golden Carp + Scorpion = ???

Pros
- Even more addictive than the original Alchemy game. Lots of animal combinations, and more being added all the time.
- The pro version comes with no ads, as well as the ability to “lock” animals in for matching.
- There are links built in for every animal to a Wikipedia page to learn more about that animal.
- You can pull up a list of combos you’ve already unlocked with each animal.
- There are “dominant” and “recessive” genes to match, making it that much more challenging.

I have to admit, I love Alchemy, but Alchemy Genetics is the one I choose to play 9 times out of 10 if given the choice.
Instead of matching elements to create new items, in Alchemy Genetics you are matching animals, splicing their genes to get new creatures. One interesting thing that really gives this version a unique spin in my opinion is that every animal has a unique set of “genes” that repeat amongst them, but no two are the same. To match animals, you choose a “dominant” and “recessive” animal to match, and depending on their genes, you either make a new animal or you don’t. In the original Alchemy, it didn’t matter which order you selected your items to match – you place one on top of the other, so order doesn’t matter. However, in Genetics, it does matter. A combination one way does not translate into the same combo, or a combo at all, the opposite way. This, to me, adds an element of challenge, and makes it harder to unlock new animals because you can’t simply systematically match each one systematically one at a time. Well, I suppose you can, but it would take an incredibly long time to do, considering there are currently 500 possible combinations to find- we have some below, and that’s a lot of animals to try each way. I’ve been playing now for a while, since several updates back, and I STILL only have about 280 unlocked.
In the pro version, in addition to no ads, the game also requires fewer permissions and gives you the option of “locking in” an animal as dominant or recessive. This allows you to have some system in place for matching, since you can test a wide range of animals against one potential match, instead of having to manually select each one every time.
And if all that weren’t enough, in addition to the traditional matching gameplay, there is also a challenge mode, where you have a certain number of moves to try and unlock different specific animals.

Fun Factor:
If you think Alchemy is fun, you will most definitely love Alchemy Genetics. The graphics are better, there are more gameplay options (although I personally don’t use the challenges all that much because I’m still trying to unlock all the animals in traditional mode!) and the pro version is worth the money for the ability to lock in animals alone. This adds to the fun factor for me since it takes out some of the frustration and repetitiveness of it.
Addictive:
Once you start, you’ll find it hard to put down. My husband caught me lying in bed one night trying to find just a few more combos before I went to sleep. It’s that kind of game. 
Graphics:
I really like the graphics in Genetics. The animals are cute, and some of the combos will make you smile as they are not only traditional animals, but nods to pop culture and various legends. It makes it exciting to see what you’ll manage to unlock next. Each one has it’s own distinctive look, so there will be no mistaking the dog for the fox, for example.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
One thing I haven’t touched on yet that adds to the game is the use of vibration. When you make a match you’ve already unlocked, there is just one slight buzz. However, when you unlock a new animal, it will buzz twice and give you the animals used and what the name of the new animal is on the screen. I really like this vibration feature – when you get into it and are quickly going through trying different combos, it gives you a cue to stop and see what you just got, rather than trying to figure out if any of the animals now on screen are new when you’re done.
