Advent 2012: 25 Christmas Apps is a seasonal app-discovery tool that lets you find a new app every day of December leading up to Christmas day itself. Select a window, complete a simple Christmas-related task and reveal the app. Apps consist of various freemium titles and links directly to the Google Play Store. While you’ve probably heard of a few apps here, it might be a way to uncover something shiny and new.
Price: Free
Tested on: Nexus 4
Content Rating: High Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- A few gems to discover!
- Easy to use!
- Fun mini-games for kids!
Cons
- The app doesn’t really ‘give’ you anything despite what the description says. It just points you in the direction of apps that are free whether you access them through the app or not.
Features:
With Christmas upon us, many people (myself included) are racing our way through our advent calendars, one chocolaty bite at a time. Plus I’m sure you’ve seen how AndroidTapp is literally giving away gadgets for ours.
So, how about trying out a virtual advent calendar too? Instead of little treats, however, how about you discover new Android apps? If you get your head around that concept, you’ll grasp what Advent 2012: 25 Christmas Apps is all about. Although I should point out that; a) the apps aren’t actually Christmassy and b) they’re free anyway- it’s just that the app gives you Google Play Store links to them instead of finding them yourselves.
So, we’re already a few days into December and there’s already lots of windows to open. First you have to find the date in front of a delightfully Xmas-themed animated background. Then you have to complete a mini-game (things like breaking up a gingerbread man and putting decorations on Christmas trees) and then you are taken to a page which reveals the app or game. Now, the games themselves are usually freemium games and the ones I’ve found thus far include Marvel War of Heroes and Airport City- which we reviewed here at AndroidTapp back in February. While there are one or two ‘stocking fillers’ (i.e. apps that aren’t that great), there are still quite a few which are very playable and fun.
Advent 2012: 25 Christmas Apps is a nicely designed app and, although it is quite simplistic, it works well and is very stable in my experience. One or two people in the comments section of the Google Play Store have accused it of being unstable but I’ve had no such issues.

Usefulness:
If you’re getting into the spirit of Christmas and fancy trying a novel app discovery tool that lets you cutely unwrap gifted applications, this is pretty cool by all accounts.
Ease of Use:
Absolute child’s-play. Find the date, complete the puzzle, download the game. The app will even send you the occasional notification to remind you.
Frequently Used:
Well, my guess is you’ll use it daily, up until Christmas. But then you’ll be unwrapping all your Xmas presents. This is the third year the developers have launched an advent calendar app so I’m certain we’ll see them again in the future!
Interface:
The interface is functional, simple and easy to navigate.
