Features:

A Game With Balls is not some Duke Nukem style  shooting game with attitude; instead it is exactly what it says it is “A Game With Balls.” LOL. The object of the game is shoot ball bearing shaped circular objects at large geometrical shapes of all kinds and sizes in an effort to avoid being hit by them and to stay alive. A Game With Balls features 3 levels of difficulty,  4 different playable levels, tilt and touch controls, and Open Feint support.

In “A Game With Balls” you play the role of a turret who is able to shoot balls out at oncoming geometrical shapes. There are three different levels of difficulty in the game: Normal, Hard, and Insane. Each level of difficulty has a greater number of geometrical objects and these objects increase in size on harder difficulty levels. In order to stay alive in AGWB you have to fire balls from the turret in order to push the oncoming geometrical objects away from you. If you are hit by one of the oncoming objects your turret is destroyed and the round is over. This creates some interesting situations in the game where you are able to bounce multiple balls off of multiple objects and create chain reactions to protect your lone turret from the oncoming hordes.

The controls for the game can either be tilt or touch. Of the two control methods I preferred tilt because I found it much easier to control. With tilt controls, all you have to do is tilt the device in order to adjust the firing angle of your turret. Then with a single tap on the screen you are able to fire a small ball the size of a ball bearing. With a double press on the screen you are able to fire a massive ball the size of a cannonball. The smaller balls require less ammunition and therefore can be fired much more frequently than the larger ones which require a large amount of ammo.

The larger balls are more effective at moving larger geometrical shapes while the smaller ones are more useful when you are in a pinch or against smaller objects. The great thing about the smaller balls is that they can be fired in large quantities; so when a large object is coming your way with many smaller ones in tow you can fire an onslaught of balls at the group to turn them slowly away. While the larger balls are useful when a large lone object is floating directly at you and you need to push it away quickly.

There are four different stages in AGWB: Classic, etherVISION, indigo NOTIONS, and bubblegum ODYSSEY. You begin with Classic mode and then can purchase other gameplay variants by spending the balls you earn on the completion of a level to unlock new stages. In Classic mode the background is a simple white with classic geometric shapes heading your way such as circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, etc. All of the colors are solid and simple and this mode is one of the simplest to play.

In etherVision all of the shapes look like something out of a kaleidoscope. The background is set in outerspace and the objects are all bright and multicolored with shapes within shapes. This mode is one of the most fun to play, but also one of the more difficult to play.

Indigo NOTIONS is a play off of the classic variant. Most of the objects follow standard geometrical shapes, but with more bright colors and a softer tone. The background is set with white and blue where the tones appear to be the side of a mountain covered in snow.

In bubblegum ODYSSEY the shapes are a mixture of solid colors and bright and transparent combinations. The shapes range from circles, squares, and rectangles, to transparent floating skulls. The background is set on the same mountainous slope as in indigo NOTIONS, but instead of a white and blue background the colors are purple, pink, and blue. This is the hardest stage to unlock requiring you to accumulate 2000 balls to be able to purchase it.

Finally, A Game With Balls has OpenFeint support. This allows you to unlock in-game achievements and post your scores to an online leaderboard. Achievements include “Surviving for 5 Minutes using only primary fire” as well as ” Playing bubblegum ODYSSEY 100 times.” Online leaderboards are arranged by level, time survived, and difficulty which allows you to accurately compare yourself and compete with other players.

Fun Factor:

A Game With Balls is extremely enjoyable to play and creates a feeling while playing similar to Fruit Ninja. In AGWB you are forced to be creative and combo balls off of oncoming objects in such a way that you can survive for as long as possible on as little ammunition as you can manage. The music is also created to make a similar effect with its Zen-like ambiances which allow you to relax and play the game, while slowing stimulating your mind. The soundtracks change with each stage creating a new feeling and a whole new gameplay experience.

Addictive:

A Game With Balls is an extremely addictive time waster. Combo-ing off of oncoming objects is an enjoyable experience and since many of the OpenFeint achievements are based off of the length of time played there is always plenty of reasons to keep on playing.

Graphics:

The graphics in AGWB are simple but elegant. Many of the objects in the game are based on simple geometrical shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, etc. However, AGWB takes those shapes and adds its own unique flavor with transparent skulls inside of circles, squares inside of rectangles, and neon colored circles with interesting semi-transparent patterns. Although this game is not one of the best games I have reviewed graphically, it is certainly one of the most interesting and creative design concepts.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

A Game With Balls makes no use of your device’s haptic feedback, but it does make excellent use of both the Accelerometer and sound.

The Accelerometer controls in AGWB are great. You are able to easily adjust your cannon’s aim by slowing tilting your device back and forth. You do not need to make huge adjustments in order to move the cannon in AGWB. Instead you need to make very minor and discrete adjustments to aim. This makes the game convenient to play, even in public.

The soundtrack in AGWB is excellent. Each stage has its own unique music with each soundtrack crafted to create a relaxing and stimulating feeling during gameplay. The soundtrack for this game is definitely one of the reasons it is so enjoyable and I highly recommend leaving the sound on while playing, because it allows you to relax and focus your mind on the level at hand.

Should you Download A Game With Balls? Yes! A Game With Balls is a highly enjoyable time wasting game in a similar vein as Fruit Ninja. AGWB has an excellent soundtrack, four unique stages, and full OpenFeint achievement system support thus can provide hours of enjoyable gameplay at a very low price! My only complaints is that I wish there were more stages with more strangely shaped objects; and I wish there was support for physical controls especially on the Xperia Play. However, this game is still a steal at only $0.99 so I highly recommend picking this game up if you have nothing to do, and hopefully the developer will add more for this game later!
