7×7 – play this challenging combo of Connect Four meets Tetris!
Apr 8, 2013 9:02 AM –
7×7 is a simple yet hugely addictive and challenging puzzle game for Android. Create lines of four coloured squares to remove them, stop the grid from filling and accumulate points as you progress through the levels. Lines can be made vertically, horizontally and diagonally. If you enjoy simple puzzlers, this is definitely a game to try.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Smooth graphics!
- Very challenging!
- Easy to play, hard to master!
- Steep learning curve- get’s tough very quickly.
7×7 is a game that takes place on a simple 7×7 grid. To play, you simply drag coloured squares around the board to link four or more into a row. These squares then disappear. With each non-scoring attempt, new squares are added, so you have to keep the grid as clear as you can. The game is very easy to actually play- but with more squares added the further you progress the harder it becomes. This ultimately means that even level 2 is pretty tough, maybe too tough.
I usually take to these kind of games like a fish to water, and with 7×7 it was no different. When I didn’t fly through the early levels I started to wonder if I had missed something- a trick, a technique or an approach that I had neglected to deploy. However, no matter how I play the game, it still defeats me far quicker than it perhaps should. Oddly, I still find myself incredibly addicted, even if making it level 3 feels like a massive achievement.
Thankfully, there are a couple of power-ups to help you. For example, you can use a ‘Move Anyway’ which lets you move one square wherever you like. You begin with two of these and can earn more by creating two lines with one move. Additionally, there is an undo move which lets you retake a go. While these are cool, you find yourself using these very early on!
The interface is very smooth- bright, blocky, responsive and slick, not a million miles away from WP’s Metro launcher thematic. Very 2D but sleek and crisp, a great combination for a neat little puzzle game such as this. Check out gameplay video below:

If you enjoy puzzle games, especially games like Tetris or 3/4 or more in a row games like Bejewelled, this should be right up your street. It’s a tough game to play well, but it’s undoubtedly fun to play.
Despite the fact I found it pretty tricky, I still thoroughly enjoyed playing the game and remain quite addicted to it. I think because it is so fantastically easy to play, you forever want to have one more go.
The graphics, as mentioned before, are crisp, smooth and responsive. The game is quite minimalist in design, and this works well with the simple-yet-challenging gameplay.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
7×7 lacks anything in the way of sound that I could find, and there were no sound-related settings in the menu. I think perhaps the game could use a few bleeps and tings here and there but it’s not a huge loss without them.
